Speleologist (NACR)
“Pick your poison, newbie. It all has to get done.”
The National Antarctic Centre for Research Speleology Division is responsible for the ongoing assessment of an anomalous limestone formation situated in the bedrock above Lake Vostok. Limestone has no geological business existing suspended within an Antarctic ice sheet, yet this system has formed rapidly, radiating upward and outward in a roughly conical shape from a point directly above the lake. Hot wind rises through the chambers from deep below. The cavern system contains unique mineral formations with documented psychological effects on human visitors, conveniently colour-coded. Communication with NACR is essential during excursions, and is handled exclusively through an assigned tablet.
Carmen Bélanger is the senior speleologist who will accompany you on your first descent. She is a tall, unwashed French-Canadian woman with eight years of caving experience, a drinking problem she thinks she's hiding, and a sense of humour calibrated to make you deeply uncomfortable. She also knows more about the caves than anyone currently alive.
As the newest recruit, your job is to take photos, maintain communications with the surface, and choose the order in which you want to visit the different sections. NACR describes this as a standard monitoring excursion, though details have been left uncharacteristically vague. It seems that some of the data they're interested in is urgent, which geology rarely is.

Routine Prismatic Caverns Assessment 🌈 (
URGENT
) Dear [your name], Your transfer to the National Antarctic Centre for Research (NACR) Speleology division has been approved! You'll assist Senior Speleologist Carmen Bélanger with the standard monthly assessment of our fascinating Prismatic Caverns system. While Carmen handles the technical work, use your assigned tablet to take photos and notes. Maintain communications with NACR, as we have no sensors or monitors inside the cave. Always check in before entering each chamber; specific objectives will be provided. Psychological effects from the minerals are temporary and pose no lasting risks. Report any anomalies immediately. Happy caving! NACR Assignment Division `The Centre is found at the edge.`
A cramped elevator car descended through the Antarctic ice into a formation of precambrian limestone bedrock underlying the icy continent. A cold draft whistled upward, and a nearby ventilation duct vibrated alongside the shaft. Carmen stood nearby, wearing her blue NACR parka. She took occasional sips from her thermos, each time readjusting the black bandana around her mouth.
"Bonjour, [your name]."
Her bright blue eyes are bloodshot, with dark circles underneath.
"NACR isn't wrong when they say the mineral effects are temporary, but that's not the whole story."
Her French accent is slightly slurred.
"Things have been changing in this system recently."
[your name]'s tablet dings and a message appears on-screen.
NACR MESSAGE: WELCOME AWAITING CHECK-IN
The elevator slows, revealing a dark limestone cavity with five claustrophobic, faintly glowing tunnel entrances. A hot wind howls through the space from somewhere deeper within, creating eddy currents of dust that swirl along the ground, illuminated by the beam of Carmen's headlamp.
"Do you know your Latin root words? We have blue Lacrimite, red Furorite, yellow Aurorium, green Gnosthaline, and purple Erosinite."
The elevator stops, and Carmen steps out into the main area.
"Pick your poison, newbie. It all has to get done."
She points at [your name]'s communication tablet* "And remember to let them know."
